Durham County RFU announce Sedgefield RUFC as January’s Story of the Month Winners
Durham County RFU started 2020 with a bang, offering Clubs the chance to win £100.00. Clubs where asked to submit stories about the County’s AGP’s!
Many thanks to Sedgefield RUFC for submitting this great story on how they used Billingham RFC AGP to play their first ever County Vets match. Please read below story, written by Gerald McGill, Sedgefield RUFC.
Sedgefield Spartans played their first ever match in a County Vets match, away to Billingham on their AGP pitch.
This was a unique opportunity for the Club to further expand their participation with a large squad assembled for what would be a challenging fixture with Billingham Hippos.
This was as much about getting some old mates together on the pitch as well as hoping to win and while we were well beaten we were certainly competitive.
As well as the playing squad there was plenty of support from younger players who came to see their future … it truly was amazing to see the look of wonder in young YB, the Towlers and Owen’s eyes as they realised one day, if they continue on their path and develop enough, they can aspire to pull on a Sedge Spartans shirt.
In despatches the highlights were.
- No one had a stroke or heart attack.
- Everyone got on the pitch and played a part.
- Chris Dawson and Andy Fife completed their returns from injury.
- Richie Woods try saving tackle on a winger.
- Darell McClaren’s outrageous chip over to score the Spartans first ever try
- Some lapsed players re-joined the fold and are keen to resume playing in our newly formed third team.
With the match played under lights on a Friday night in November the atmosphere was filled with excitement and there was a great spirit with Billingham offering excellent hospitality resulting in a very enjoyable afternoon including some free beers! (Thanks Billingham!) and a stack of pasties on offer after the game … always a winner!
Both sides played some pretty decent rugby with the Hippos running out winners 36 – 8 but with for Sedgefield the future (ha ha) looks bright, and that’s not just under the AGP lights!!
If you would like to win £100.00 for your Club, you still have 4 opportunities to do so! Februarys Story of the Month will be asking for stories on Six Nations. For more information, and the application form please click here.
